The Forge

From The Cycle: Frontier Wiki
The Forge, idle

The Forge is an ancient machine hidden deep in the caverns of Tharis Island. Its exact origins are still unknown and shrouded in secrecy. This strange structure lies dormant, but some claim that, under the right circumstances, it may come alive once more. The Forge holds great power for those cunning and brave enough to unlock its potential.

Summary

The Forge is an ancient machine deep in the caverns of Tharis Island. During the Storm it can be used the forge Tharis Iron into several types of Tharis Iron Ingots. These ingots can be used to add perks to a piece of armor or backpack. Which perk is added to the weapon depends on the recipe item which was supplied together with the ingots. Finally, an Abyss Alloy can be used to get a random Exotic or Legendary piece of gear with perks on it from The Forge.

Location

The Forge is located deep in the caverns of Tharis Island.

Step by step

  1. Go to Storm Pillar on Tharis Island.
  2. Go down the structure by using the gaps and stairs on each level.
  3. Walk around the ring of the lowest floor until there is a cave entrance leading out of the floor.
  4. Follow the cave until a large open cave is reached, with Teratomorphic Glowing Crystals. Parkour past the side of the open cave.
  5. Enter the room with the pipes and red lights by crouching, then go left.
  6. Following the pipes until The Forge is reached.

Mechanics

The Forge, in use.

Storm

The Forge is only active while the Storm is ongoing. The storm lasts 280 seconds ( 4min 40sec). While the storm is not active, interacting with The Forge only shows '???'. If The Forge was started just before the Storm ended, the resulting item can still be taken out of The Forge after the Storm has ended.

Using the forge

The Forge has 5 slots for items. At the moment, recipes can only go up to 4 items, so the 5th slot is unused. Prospectors can put items into the forge and then click the start button. If the items do not make a valid recipe listed below, nothing will happen. If it is a valid recipe, it will start forging. It takes up to a minute and 30 seconds for it to finish forging, depending on the recipe.

Forge recipes

There are three separate types of forge recipes:

  1. Tharis Iron and Pure Tharis Iron can be forged into Tharis Iron Ingot, Charged Tharis Iron Ingot, and Super Charged Tharis Iron Ingot.
  2. The Forge can be used to alter gear, by giving them unique perks. This involves a ( Super) ( Charged) Tharis Iron Ingot, a piece of Armor or a Backpack, and one or two items specific to a recipe.
  3. An Abyss Alloy can be used to get a random Exotic or Legendary item from The Forge.

Tharis iron

Tharis Iron can be used to create Tharis Iron Ingots

Tharis Iron can be used to create Tharis Iron Ingots. It takes 30sec for the (Pure) Tharis Iron to forge into ingots.

Ingots ( Super) ( Charged) (Tharis Iron Ingot) are created in 3s. There is a random chance that an ingot is replaced by its stronger version, which can happen to all 3 items. It will take 3 ingots to upgrade or alter a piece of gear.

Input Output
Amount Chance Item
9 Tharis Iron
3 Teratomorphic Crystal Core
3x 97% Tharis Iron Ingot
3% Charged Tharis Iron Ingot
9 Pure Tharis Iron
3 Teratomorphic Crystal Core
3 Letium
3x 97% Charged Tharis Iron Ingot
3% Super Charged Tharis Iron Ingot

Altered gear

Altered Gear has a unique item overlay, and slightly different images.

Prospectors can Alter their gear with Progenitor tech. This gives the gear one or two gear perks. For example, extra stamina, or reduced damage from storm lightning.

This involves a piece of armor or a backpack, a ( Super) ( Charged) Tharis Iron Ingot, and an item unique to that specific recipe.

Mechanics

  • Forging in this way uses the following items:
  1. One piece of armor or a backpack that is of Epic, Exotic, or Legendary rarity.
  2. Three ( Super) ( Charged) Tharis Iron Ingot. The ingots must be the same rarity as the piece of gear being upgraded.
  3. One or two perk specific items.
    • A piece of gear is able to have up to two perks.
    • If an item is used in multiple recipes, the resulting perk is chosen randomly. It can be beneficial to use a rarer item that is used in less recipes, to increase the chances the resulting perk is the perk you want.
    • The strength of the perk is completely random. It does not matter what rarity the gear has, nor the rarity of the perk item that was used to upgrade the item.
    • If multiple stacks of a specific perk item are supplied, it ignores any duplicates. This means it is not possible to get two different perks with the same perk item. It is still possible to get two different perks with two different perk items, even if both perks have matching items in its list of compatible perk items.
  • Forging an item that already has perks will remove those perks from it, and entirely replace them with new matching perks.
  • The resulting piece of gear will be the same rarity as the input gear, and have one or two perks, depending on the perk specific items that were supplied. The resulting piece of gear has maximum durability, even if the input piece of gear was damaged.

Ingot cost and forging time

The rarity of the piece of gear determines the rarity of the ingot that is used, as well as the time it takes to forge said item.

Rarity Ingot Forging length
Epic 3 Tharis Iron Ingot 45sec
Exotic 3 Charged Tharis Iron Ingot 1min
Legendary 3 Super Charged Tharis Iron Ingot 1min 30sec

Perk item rarities

The rarity of the perk item determines how many items are required to qualify for that recipe. For ease of use, this is also shown in the next table.

Rarity Amount
Common 3
Uncommon 3
Rare 2
Epic 2
Exotic 1
Legendary 1

Side effects

When The Forge finishes forging a piece of Altered Gear, there is a chance for one of two item to be added to the resulting items.

Abyss alloy

An Abyss Alloy can be used to gain random powerful items

Using an Abyss Alloy in the forge gives a random Exotic or Legendary Armor or Backpack.

There is a 95% chance of getting an Exotic item, and a 5% chance of getting a Legendary item. The gear is altered with a random set of compatible gear perks.

Forging time

Lore

In the deepest, darkest depths of the caverns lies a massive, outlandish machine: The Forge. Its exact origins are still unknown and shrouded in secrecy, though some factions still have a vested interest in learning more about the powers held by such ancient technology. Only the bravest of Prospectors will have a shot at uncovering its secrets, but keep in mind many who tried before have been lost forever. Or worse, clawed their way back battered and scarred. Changed. Exploring the abandoned faction camps and research facilities may hold vital evidence in unlocking the mysteries for those foolish enough to ignore the warnings left by early exploration parties.

Missions

This is a list of missions that interact with The Forge in some way.

Update history

Patch 3.2.0
  • The Forge will no longer upgrade the rarity of gear when forging, because of this:
    • The outcome of forging will always give you the same quality gear that was used as a base for forging.
    • The forge will only accept Epic, Exotic, and Legendary gear; Rare gear will no longer be accepted.
    • Base ingots are used with Epic gear and give Epic results. Charged ingots are used for Exotic gear. Supercharged ingots are used with Legendary gear.
    • You cannot turn Exotic gear into Legendary in the forge anymore, but using Abyss Alloy makes it possible to get Legendary gear with perks on it. This gear can then be used as a base with Supercharged ingots to roll a new set of perks.
    • It is no longer possible to craft gear without perks on it. Therefore, when crafting gear, you will need to throw in at least one valid perk-bearing material in the required quantity.
  • In situations where more than one of the same ingredients has been put into the forge (in required quantity), only the first material will be used to reroll perks. Other identical materials will be ignored.
  • Faster Healing perk can now only appear on helmets, which means it is no longer stackable. The range of possible values for the perk have returned to its original state: Minimum +10% healing speed, Maximum +30% healing speed.
  • Removed the Enhanced Alien Hunter Vision perk.
  • Many perk recipes use different items now.
Patch 2.1.0
  • Added Teratomorphic Crystal Cores to ingot recipes
  • Removed Teratomorphic Crystal Cores from gear recipes
Hotfix 2.0.3
  • Nerfed all forge recipes.
Patch 2.0.0
  • Added The Forge
